1  The Elder Futhark / Uruz / That worked better than I expected on: October 15, 2012, 05:34:17 PM
So I got Galin Krasskova's book Runes: Theory & Practice and started the galdr exercises. Yesterday I took some time to try the uruz rune. My craft name Ula is the opposite of the ale rune and I decided to start with my name. So I was doing the exercise and imagining this huge auroch all hairy and red with this horns protecting his herd and while 'singing' the rune I just blurted out Thor's name.

Now I have no relationship with Thor and have never had an interest. I tend to focus on the Vanir and just, I guess as a "modern" women, say Thor is not really necessary to me. So I saw Thor as the protector for once not because we are weak but because he has instinct and insight we might not have. I decided a long time ago that my husband and I have roles and those fit in well with my Heathen beliefs so why all of a sudden not think I need guardianship? If walking through a prison would I shun a guard escort? Heck no! So why am I blocking out Thor who can give me insight to strangers I meet as to who is good for my family and who isn't'.

It was a big deal for me. So since I have no kindred except online I thought I would share the experience. For the first time since actively acknowledging my Heathen practice I have a understanding of Thor I have put off and would consider getting and wearing a Hammer.

He and the other people in the book talk about spirit walking and working with them that way. They only touch lightly on runes. No one rune is used more than others and they are used more to find  your way and hide items then to call anything.

I have read two other books in the four book series. He main writer works with Hela. You forget that Odin, Thor and Freyr all have giantesses as wives at some point.

The Jotunbok: Working With The Giants Of The Northern Tradition by Raven Kaldera
I just downloaded this book and I am about half way through. It doesn't address runes specifically but it about Northern Shamanism bypractitionerss and it's been interesting. Has anyone else read any of his books? It's mostly about the different giants and the Nine Worlds.

I noticed a curiosity in stanza 5: since when is the Sun masculine and the Moon feminine in the Northern traditions?
I suspect he took some liberties with his translation, though it's a popular one.

It's not. I was pretty surprised when I first came across this but it makes perfect sense once you think about it.

That makes sense. I will try them both out and see how I feel. Up until now I have been just trying to learn the runes and using them in spell work.

I have to close up my altar after use and for that reason found myself disconnected from my tools. I decided to name my athame and did a naming ritual. It worked very well and I not only feel more connected but it increases the feeling of energy when I hold it. I have decided to mark my runes. They are wood with the runes burned in. I am going to make some dragon's blood ink and add some blood and mark them and then sleep with them to attach myself to them. This is what I did with the athame until I got the name. Any thoughts on this or has anyone done something like this to feel more connected with their runes?

I have a question could you "throw" runes like they "throw" bones? Would it be disrespectful? Could you mix other items with the runes like dice or rocks or trinkets? If you put down a cloth with rings (one past, present, future) and read the runes in the rings would that be accurate?

I recently bought Makko to make some incense cones as it's self burning. In Japan they take a u shaped piece of wood and make in indent in sand then fill it with makko and burn. I immediately though to drawing a rune in the sand and doing the same thing. It's goes with some of the other posts of drawing the rune and letting it be taken, especially the one on the beach.
